LA Marathon Fundraiser 2019

TEAM IMBCR races in the 2019 SKECHERS MARATHON

TEAM IMBCR will run again to raise awareness and much needed funds to support the vital cancer research being conducted in the Laboratory of the Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research (IMBCR).

This year’s participating members in the 2019 Skechers Performance LA Marathon on Sunday, March 24 include: IMBCR’s Team Captain, Eric Sanchez, Director of Animal Research IMBCR, Tiffany Chang, Medical Scribe to Dr. James R. Berenson, Susan Hawkins, Clinical Medical Assistant to Dr. James R. Berenson, Monique Sisneros and others.

“I am running this marathon because it will take lots of training, which involves waking up early on weekends for my morning runs when I’d much rather stay in bed and sleep. At some point during my morning run, I will get tired and want to give up (as I have previously trained for other marathons and know this will occur). Similarly, I know that sometimes patients want to give up, not come to the clinic and not receive any treatment. I, thus, want to encourage MM patients to not give up, as I will also not give up and will continue running.”

So, please help our non-profit research institute (IMBCR) and donate what you can so that we can continue to find better therapies and ways to monitor the disease more quickly and accurately (i.e., soluble BCMA). Your donations will also help scientists better understand how MM develops and spreads throughout the bone marrow; and, thus, ultimately unlock ways to prevent it altogether as well as novel means to stop its growth.

A little update about my post-grad life–I currently work as a full-time medical scribe for James R. Berenson, M.D., Inc. These past few months, I have experienced so much growth, joy, and fulfillment through serving this role. The clinic I work for holds a special place in my heart because every day I am surrounded by family–not co-workers and managers. It is so heartwarming to see the love and support pouring from this community — individuals living with multiple myeloma and other bone cancers comforting frightened, newly-diagnosed patients…spouses faithfully accompanying their significant others’ appointments…friends cheering on individuals whose disease has worsened on several prior regimens.

I am both in awe and deeply humbled by our patients’ fervent optimism and passion to live life fully despite their cancer diagnosis and other chronic conditions they battle with on a daily basis. Their gratitude for life is contagious and has taught me to become more mindful of the blessings in front of me.

It would mean the world to me if you could support me in my fundraising efforts and send me off to the 2019 Skechers Performance LA Marathon. I am raising money to support ongoing research undertaken by our non-profit organization – Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research (IMBCR) which was founded by Dr. James Berenson. IMBCR remains the only independent non-profit cancer research institute working to find improved treatment, and ultimately a cure, for multiple myeloma, a cancer of blood cells that reside in the bone marrow. While the focus of the research is multiple myeloma, many therapies discovered in our research laboratory can apply to the treatment of other cancers, particularly cancers that spread to the bone such as prostate, breast, and lung cancer. Because of our research, we have continued to develop new treatment regimens that have benefited patients with multiple myeloma and other blood cancers. To learn more about our areas of research focus, please see addendum for more information.
